The 100 most read Bible verses. We’re Going Green We are in the midst of a comprehensive process to become more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and cost effective. We replaced our two old inefficient oil furnaces (one weighed 6000 pounds and was bigger than a car) with three high efficiency natural gas furnaces (they are the size of 2-drawer filing cabinets). We’ve installed all new programmable thermostats, and also rezoned the heating in our education wing – the reason for the 3rd furnace. The Community Aid bin on our property is used extensively by local residents. An average of about 300 pounds of clothing are placed in the bin EVERY DAY! Many of the items collected would have been otherwise discarded. In 24 months, we collected over 200,000 pounds of stuff. Most of it is resold (locally) in their Thrift Store on the Carlisle Pike. Materials that are no longer usable are shredded and used as stuffing in items such as mattresses and pillows, keeping them out of the landfill. We replaced our 6 main external doors with high efficiency models. We’re in the process of installing all new state-of-the-art storm windows outside our stained glass windows. This will save on our heating and cooling and also protect the structural integrity of the historic stained glass. We’re in the process of converting to high efficiency lighting and have also installed a high efficiency hot water heater. We replaced our office copier/printer with an Energy-Star rated model. We recycle our office paper as well as containers made from aluminum, bimetal(tin), plastics, glass, and cardboard. We collect magazines(shiny paper) and donate them to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. We collect used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lion’s Club, and collect used cell-phones and ink cartridges and recycle them also. We’ve been evaluating how we use our freezers and unplug them when we can consolidate contents with another freezer. PP&L audited our facilities electric usage for inefficiencies, at our request. We partnered with local gardeners to take their surplus vegetables and deliver them to local families that have need. We have even delivered bread & crackers that are no longer safe for human consumption to a local family that feeds it to their chickens; it’s safe for the chickens to eat. |
